Backgrounder – Northern Cod spawning stock biomass (SSB)

Highlights

  • Based on DFO’s science update, spawning stock biomass for Northern Cod has decreased 29% from 2017 to 2018.
  • The 2018 spawning stock biomass of 315,000mt is actually 15-20% lower now than it was in 1992 when the Cod Moratorium was called.
  • At the same time, fishing mortality (i.e., catches) have increased almost 300% from 4,436mt in 2015 to 13,152mt 2017.

Calculating % decline in spawning stock biomass:

(Year 1 SSB – Year 2 SSB) divided by (Y1 SSB)
(2017 – 2018) divided by (2017)
(441,000 – 315,000) / 441,000  = 0.2857

0.2857 x100 = 29% decline

*SSB data from 2017-2018
Year 1 (2017) 441,000mt
Year 2 (2018) 315,000mt
